Preferences

Preferences are personalized instructions that customize how your Hyperaide assistant interacts with you. They're like personality settings that help your assistant understand your communication style, priorities, and working preferences.

What are Preferences?

Preferences are simple text instructions that tell your assistant how you want to be treated. They can cover anything from communication style to behavioral patterns to language preferences.

Think of them as a set of rules or guidelines that your assistant always keeps in mind when working with you.

Types of Preferences

Communication Style

How your assistant should talk to you and format responses.

"Always be concise in your responses" or "Use emojis when appropriate"

Language & Tone

Language preferences and conversational tone.

"Talk to me in French" or "Use casual, friendly language"

Behavioral Preferences

How your assistant should behave and when to reach out.

"Remind me gently about tasks" or "Only notify me for urgent items"

Working Style

Your work habits and productivity preferences.

"I prefer to work in the mornings" or "Don't schedule anything on Fridays"

Common Use Cases

Here are some examples of how preferences can customize your assistant:

🗣️ Communication Preferences

• "Be concise and to the point"
• "Use bullet points for lists"
• "Always include next steps"

🌍 Language & Culture

• "Communicate in Spanish"
• "Use 24-hour time format"
• "Format dates as DD/MM/YYYY"

⏰ Timing Preferences

• "Don't send notifications after 8pm"
• "Morning check-ins only"
• "Batch notifications together"

🎯 Priority & Focus

• "Always prioritize work tasks"
• "Highlight urgent items"
• "Focus on top 3 priorities"

Managing Preferences

You can manage your preferences in several ways:

Through the Web App

  1. Navigate to Preferences in the sidebar
  2. Click "Add New Preference"
  3. Type your preference instruction
  4. Press ⌘+Enter or click "Add Preference"

You can edit or delete preferences at any time by clicking the edit or delete icons next to each preference.

Through Your Assistant

You can also ask your assistant to manage preferences for you:

  • "Add a preference that I like concise responses"
  • "Update my preference to use French instead of Spanish"
  • "Remove the preference about notifications"

Your assistant has access to tools that can create, edit, and delete preferences on your behalf.

How Preferences Work

When your assistant receives any instruction or message, it reads all your active preferences first. These preferences are included in the system prompt, ensuring your assistant always keeps them in mind.

For example, if you set a preference "Always be concise", your assistant will naturally give shorter, more focused responses across all communication channels—whether you're chatting on WhatsApp, email, or the web app.

Best Practices

✨ Be Specific

Instead of "be nice", try "use encouraging language and celebrate my progress"

📝 Keep It Simple

Each preference should be one clear instruction. Break complex preferences into multiple simple ones.

🔄 Review Regularly

As your needs change, update your preferences. Remove ones that are no longer relevant.

🧪 Experiment

Try different preferences to see what works best for you. You can always adjust or remove them.

Examples of Great Preferences

Here are some well-crafted preference examples:

  • "Always respond in a friendly, casual tone"
  • "When suggesting tasks, include estimated time to complete"
  • "Prioritize urgent items and flag them clearly"
  • "Use emojis to make messages more engaging"
  • "Break down complex information into simple steps"
  • "Ask clarifying questions before making assumptions"
  • "Proactively suggest ways to improve my workflows"
  • "Keep me updated on progress without being intrusive"

Preference vs. Instruction

Preferences are persistent rules that apply to all interactions. They shape your assistant's overall behavior.

Instructions are one-time requests for specific actions. They're for immediate tasks, not ongoing behavior.

Use preferences for "how you work" and instructions for "what to do right now."
